Everyones favourite subject is themselves. By asking questions which show genuine interest in them we give them permission to speak on their favourite subject without looking vain / egotistical etc. Once people open up a real relationship can begin.

Just came across this site, tied in with the book by Keith Ferrazzi. It highlights his idea that real networking is about finding ways to make other people more successful, approaching them with a spirit of generosity and guenuine interest. By opening up and sharing you will form a deeper and more meanigful bond. This is stark contrast to the approaches I have seen at many “networking” events, where people charge around, spending only enough time to pass on a business card and grab yours before leaving for another potential contact. I feel resonance with his approach and will definately be following up by buying the book.
